April 22 (Bloomberg) -- Acer Inc., the world’s third- largest computer vendor, expects to offer a handset equipped with Google Inc.’s Android operating system by the end of the year, becoming the latest supplier to offer alternatives to Microsoft Corp.’s software.
“We have not made any formal announcement of an Android- based device, although it’s likely that we’ll have one in 2009,” Aymar de Lencquesaing, Taipei-based Acer’s head of mobile-phone products, said in a television interview today from Singapore. “We intend to have devices that will take advantage of multiple platforms.”
Acer plans to use its presence in both computers and mobile phones to offer products that more easily synchronize data between devices, de Lencquesaing said.
The company unveiled four handset models that use Microsoft’s Windows mobile platform in February. HTC Corp., the world’s largest supplier of Microsoft-based phones, became the first to offer an Android handset when it presented its G1 in September, while Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola Inc. are also working on devices.
“One of the pain points for users around the world is ‘how do I basically port my environment from one device to another?’” de Lencquesaing said. “Because we have a suite of products in the mobile-data space that covers the whole spectrum, we can offer synchronization between all devices.”
Most of the company’s approximately 10 models of handsets to be released this year will use Windows Mobile software, while some will use “alternate” operating systems, he said without providing details.
